A cataract is a progressive clouding of the eye’s lens, which lies just behind the iris. This development impairs vision clarity and may appear as a white or opaque area in the lens. Cataracts can take different forms – nuclear, cortical, or subcapsular – based on their location in the lens. While ageing is the most common cause, cataracts can also result from genetics, eye injuries, other eye diseases, or long-term steroid use.
Diagnosis
Your ophthalmologist will perform a visual acuity test by having you read an eye chart one eye at a time, followed by a direct examination of the cornea, iris, and lens to detect and assess the cataract.
Treatment options
Cataracts are corrected through surgery—the most effective and definitive treatment. Options at Eye Associates include:
- Advanced Phacoemulsification (ultrasound-assisted cataract removal)
- Micro‑Incision Cataract Surgery (MICS)
- Traditional Small‑Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS)
- Secondary Lens Implantation when required
