Dr Cheryl Au is a comprehensive ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon with subspecialty expertise in medical retina. She provides advanced care in the diagnosis and management of diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions and a wide range of macular and retinal conditions.
Dr Au completed specialist ophthalmology training within the Sydney Eye Hospital Network, gaining broad experience across general ophthalmology and major subspecialties. She is an accomplished cataract surgeon and has supervised trainee surgeons both as Professorial Senior Registrar and as an accredited EyeSi surgical simulator supervisor. She completed her medical retina fellowship at Westmead Hospital under Professor Paul Mitchell, refining her expertise in complex retinal disease.
Dr Au holds a Bachelor of Medical Science, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Honours I) and a Master of Public Health from the University of Sydney. Her outstanding academic performance earned her the University of Sydney Undergraduate Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement and placement on the Dean’s Honour List for Excellence in Academic Performance.
She has authored multiple peer-reviewed research publications and has presented her work at national and international conferences. As the Sarks’ Research Fellow at St Vincent’s Hospital, she conducted research on age-related macular degeneration using the Sarks’ clinicopathological archive—the world’s largest collection of clinically annotated eyes.
Dr Au is a Staff Specialist at Sydney Eye Hospital and an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Notre Dame. She also contributes to professional leadership as Secretary of the RANZCO NSW Branch Executive Committee.
