Dr Colin Clement is a leading Australian specialist in cataract and glaucoma management, known for his expertise in both complex disease and advanced surgical techniques. He has been at the forefront of introducing modern treatment options—including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) and non-penetrating glaucoma surgery (NPGS)—and is widely regarded for his ability to integrate these innovations safely and effectively, either alone or combined with cataract surgery. Patients frequently seek his opinion for challenging or second-opinion cases, valuing his honest, balanced assessments and his unwavering commitment to patient-centred care.
Dr Clement completed his medical degree at the University of Sydney in 2001, followed by three years of resident training at Royal North Shore Hospital and four years of advanced ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital. He then undertook subspecialty training in the United Kingdom, including a clinical ophthalmology fellowship at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, and a glaucoma fellowship at the Western Eye Hospital, London. In 2011, he completed further specialist glaucoma training at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. He is currently a staff specialist in the glaucoma unit at Sydney Eye Hospital and a clinical lecturer at the University of Sydney, where he supervises and mentors ophthalmologists in training. Dr Clement is one of only two ophthalmologists in Australia elected as a Fellow of the International Society of Glaucoma Surgery.
Before studying medicine, Dr Clement completed a PhD at the University of Sydney, researching neural pathways that influence behavioural and physiological responses to pain. His strong scientific foundation continues to shape his clinical practice and research. He has authored one textbook, seven book chapters and more than 50 peer-reviewed papers. He is Director of the Glaucoma Surgery Wet Lab at the Sight Foundation, where he leads hands-on surgical training courses, and he serves as a founding editor of Clinical and Experimental Vision and Eye Research as well as Associate Editor of the Journal of Current Glaucoma Practice. He regularly reviews manuscripts for ophthalmic journals and is a frequent invited speaker at national and international conferences.
Dr Clement is widely recognised for his thoughtful, evidence-based approach and his commitment to advancing glaucoma care through research, education and surgical excellence.
