Retinal Artery or Vein Occlusion

Retinal artery occlusion occurs when the vessel supplying blood to the retina is blocked, often causing sudden and severe vision loss. Retinal vein occlusion happens when the vessel that drains blood from the retina becomes obstructed, leading to swelling and fluid build-up. Both conditions are serious and can cause complications such as macular oedema or neovascular glaucoma.

At Eye Associates, our team provides expert care to minimise damage and protect your vision.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis includes a comprehensive clinical eye exam to assess vision and retinal health. Imaging techniques such as fluorescein angiography and OCT scans may be used to identify blockages, fluid leakage, or macular swelling. These tools help confirm the diagnosis and guide the most effective treatment plan.

Treatment options
Controlling blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes reduces risks of recurrence or worsening.
Focal laser photocoagulation helps seal leaking vessels and reduce swelling.
Panretinal laser treatment is used to regress abnormal vessel growth and prevent further damage.
Anti-VEGF injections are being explored to limit abnormal blood vessel growth and fluid leakage.
