Glaucoma drainage devices, also known as tubes or implants, are used when medication and laser treatments are no longer effective. These devices, such as the Baerveldt tube, Molteno tube, or Ahmed Valve, are placed beneath the outer eye tissue (the conjunctiva) and allow excess fluid to exit the eye through a small tube. The fluid collects in an external reservoir and is gradually reabsorbed, helping preserve healthy eye pressure and protect vision.
Procedure summary
Anaesthesia
Local or general anaesthetic ensures your comfort during surgery.
Device Placement
A small implant is positioned under the conjunctiva, usually at the back of the eye. A tiny tube is inserted into either the front or rear chamber to channel fluid into the reservoir.
Post-Surgery Monitoring
Your specialist will monitor the implant’s function and check for signs of inflammation, blockage, or tissue scarring. Medications may be adjusted as eye pressure stabilises.
Clinical benefits
- Offers effective long-term intraocular pressure control when other treatments fail
- Ideal for complex or advanced glaucoma cases
- Durable solution with proven device options like Baerveldt, Molteno, and Ahmed
- Helps reduce reliance on medications by providing continuous fluid drainage
